Thrill of the Unknown
Trying new restaurants is one of my favorite things to do. Yes, going to a familiar place you know and love is like going home to mom’s house, but the thrill and excitement and unknowns of a new restaurant give me something to live for. I recently went to Loco Taqueria in Southie with several friends. It has a vibrant, fun atmosphere and was packed on a weekday evening. It was a bit noisy but to me that’s the sign of everyone in there having a bomb ass time. Immediately the drinks were flowing and we catching up on life’s craziness. Most of my friends ordered the Coco Marg: coconut, triple sec, tequila (obvs) and fresh lime- but I am more of a cocktail girl and got “The Cheerleader” - with 888 blueberry, lemon, mint and grapefruit bitters. It was sweet and the perfect way to start the meal and celebrate surviving my spin class beforehand.
The guac and crispy tortilla chips were delicious - they were a little bit sweet and a little bit salty in each bite.
It was dollar oyster night (every Monday), so naturally the oysters came next. I am not a huge oyster person but my friends are very into them and ordered a dozen for the table to share. I braved the unknown and tried one with some salt and gulped it down in one swish! Don’t need to do that again for a while.
The crispy cauliflower appetizer was out of control delicious. Don’t dismiss cauliflower. I typically consider it to be a fairly lame, colorless vegetable, but it is a power veg and with the right seasonings will knock your socks off. It was topped with roasted beets, a goat cheese puree, some greens, citrus orange, and sunflower seeds - I didn’t even want to share this with the group and had to exercise some self control.
Let’s Get Down to Business
Next came the tacosss - decisions, decisions! I lovee shrimp but was feeling a little more adventurous so I went with the Carne Asada. Flank steak, chimichurri, pico, green mole, queso fresco & avocado -this was a spicy, tangy, meaty dish. Two tacos was more than enough to fill me up. My friends savored the Cola Pork Carnitas and Grilled Avocado tacos. After another round of drinks everyone left stuffed and tipsy.
Loco Taqueria has a great vibe, friendly staff and really good Mexican food with a twist. I would highly recommend you try it next time you are feelin’ like getting a lil bit loco!
